Fashion and Beauty School - made by chance (MArch project)
The ‘DaDoeDoiDüDipDonDenDan School of Fashion, Beauty and Hair’ is part of a wider technical college masterplan developed collaboratively in a group of four students. The design process used chance operation and imagined notational systems (like the one that gave the school its name) to develop unexpected and otherwise unachievable objects, compositions, paintings, sculptures, movements, fashions, performances and sounds that could be interrogated for their architectural properties and integrated into a dynamic building proposal. The intention of the process was to alleviate the designer from the preconceptions of their design sensibilities and to focus on ‘The Really, Really Real’: Design Studio 15’s 2019/20 ‘brief’ title. Located in Barking Riverside the scheme merges Dagenham Sunday Market into its masterplan and fulfils the currently lacking provision for higher education in the area.
Thanks to tutors Sean Griffiths and Kester Rattenbury for helping guide the project and to masterplan collaborators Sinead Fahey, Manny Tetterfio and Greg Slipenchuk.
